FAQ

The Costa Smeralda airport in Olbia can be reached in about 30 minutes by car. We also offer shuttle services and will be happy to help you organize your unforgettable stay?

The best time to visit Sardinia depends on various factors, including the sardinia weather, the crowds and the activities you are planning. In general, however, the period between may and september is considered optimal for a visit due to the warm weather and ideal conditions for activities such as beach vacations, hiking and sightseeing. During these months, the mediterranean sea is warm enough for swimming and the days are long and sunny. If you want to avoid the crowds, we recommend may, june and september, as the peak tourist season is in the summer months of july and august. Remember to book early to get the best prices and accommodation.

Costa Smeralda: The famous “Emerald Coast” in the north-east of Sardinia is known worldwide for its crystal-clear waters, luxurious marinas and exclusive resorts. The coast stretches for several kilometers and offers spectacular views and first-class leisure opportunities.

Nuraghi: Sardinia is home to more than 7,000 nuraghi, mysterious prehistoric towers and fortresses built between 1900 and 730 BC. These fascinating structures are unique to the island and offer insights into its ancient history.

Grotta di Nettuno (Neptune’s Cave): This impressive cave is located on the coast of Alghero and is accessible by sea or via a staircase. The cave is adorned with impressive stalactites and stalagmites and offers a spectacular sight for visitors.

La Maddalena Archipelago: Located off the north-east coast of Sardinia, this breathtaking archipelago consists of seven main islands and numerous smaller islets. With crystal clear waters, pristine beaches and a rich maritime history, the region is a paradise for nature and water sports lovers.

Su Nuraxi of Barumini: This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most important archaeological sites in Sardinia. Su Nuraxi is a prehistoric settlement with an impressive nuragic complex that offers an insight into life on the island thousands of years ago.

These five sights are just a small part of what Sardinia has to offer. The island is rich in history, culture and natural beauty and offers something special for every visitor.

The north-east coast of Sardinia, especially the area around the Costa Smeralda, is famous for some of the most beautiful beaches not only in Italy, but in the whole world. Here you will find crystal clear waters, fine white sand and breathtaking landscapes. Here are five of the most beautiful beaches in this region:

Spiaggia del Principe: Often referred to as one of the most beautiful beaches on the Costa Smeralda, Spiaggia del Principe offers turquoise waters and fine sand surrounded by rocky hills. The beach was allegedly named after one of the favorites of the Aga Khan, who spearheaded the development of this coast in the 1960s.

Cala di Volpe: Located in the bay of the same name, this beach is known for its crystal clear waters and surrounding picturesque landscape.

La Celvia: With its fine sand and granite-colored rocks framing the azure waters, La Celvia is another outstanding beach on the Costa Smeralda. The beach is surrounded by lush Mediterranean vegetation and offers a dreamlike backdrop.

Liscia Ruja: Liscia Ruja is known for its long, wide beach and calm, clear waters, making it ideal for families. Although it can get quite busy here in summer, its size makes it easy to find a quiet spot.

Pittulongu or Bados are the nearest Beaches from the COUNTRY RETREAT SMERALDA. Your will find fine sand, beautiful water and the amazing view of the Tavolara.

Olbia, one of the most important cities in Sardinia, is a central hub for ferry connections linking the Italian mainland and other Mediterranean destinations with the island. Several shipping companies offer crossings to Olbia, with the main routes departing from various ports. Here are some of the main ferry routes and shipping companies that call at Olbia:

From Genoa: Genoa is one of the largest and most important ports in Italy and offers regular connections to Olbia. The crossing takes around 10-12 hours, which prompts many travelers to choose an overnight ferry. The main shipping companies operating this route are Moby Lines and Tirrenia.

From Livorno: Livorno is another popular starting point for travel to Olbia. The crossing is shorter than from Genoa, usually taking around 6-8 hours, and is also offered by Moby Lines and Grimaldi Lines.

From Civitavecchia: Civitavecchia, the port of Rome, offers connections to Olbia that take around 5-7 hours. This route is popular with travelers wishing to travel to or from Rome. Tirrenia and Grimaldi Lines are the main operators for this route.

From Piombino: During the high season, there are also connections from Piombino to Olbia, mainly operated by Moby Lines. This route is less frequent than the others and serves as an alternative option for travelers.

From Naples: There are also occasional connections from Naples to Olbia, especially in the summer months. This route is longer and is not offered as frequently as the other routes.

In the northeast of Sardinia, there are several options for renting a car, both in larger cities and in tourist areas. However, to find the best and cheapest place, you should consider several factors, including location, availability, rates and special offers. Here are some options you can consider:

Olbia Airport: Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport is one of the largest airports in Sardinia and has several car rental companies, including international companies such as Sixt, Hertz, Avis, Europcar and Enterprise. As the airport is a major hub for tourists, there is often a wide selection of vehicles and competitive prices.

Olbia city center: There are several car rental companies in the city of Olbia itself, both large companies and local providers. The city center is often more convenient to reach than the airport and may offer better prices, especially if you are traveling outside of the high season.

Port of Olbia: If you arrive in Olbia by ferry, you will also find car rental companies at the port. This is a convenient option if you plan to travel directly from there by car.

We at the COUNTRY RETREAT SMERALDA also offers shuttle service.

Far from the simple association with canned sardines also know as “Sardine fish”, Sardinian cuisine offers a rich and varied culinary tradition that is deeply rooted in local culture and history. Shaped by the island’s resources – from the mountains to the sea – Sardinian cuisine is characterized by an impressive range of flavors and dishes that go far beyond seafood. Here are three typical dishes that illustrate the variety and richness of Sardinian gastronomy:

Culurgiones: these stuffed dumplings are visually similar to the well-known ravioli, but have a Sardinian identity all of their own. The filling typically consists of potatoes, pecorino cheese, mint and sometimes onions. They are served in a tomato sauce or simply garnished with melted butter and sage. The artful preparation of the culurgiones, especially the typical sealing, is a sign of true craftsmanship.

Malloreddus alla Campidanese: Malloreddus, also known as Sardinian gnocchi, are another specialty of the island. These small, grooved noodles are usually served with a hearty tomato sauce enriched with sausage or meat and often plenty of pecorino cheese. Malloreddus alla Campidanese offers a hearty and satisfying insight into rural Sardinian cuisine.

Spaghetti con bottarga: A typical Sardinian fish dish that reflects the island’s rich maritime tradition is bottarga di muggine, also known as mullet roe. Bottarga is a dried and pressed fish roe that is highly prized in Sardinian cuisine and is often referred to as the “golden caviar of the Mediterranean”. Although bottarga itself is more of an ingredient than a dish in its own right, it plays a starring role in many Sardinian recipes, especially in pasta dishes. A classic dish in which bottarga plays the leading role is spaghetti con bottarga. This simple but exquisitely aromatic dish consists of spaghetti sautéed in olive oil with garlic and chili peppers and then sprinkled with grated bottarga. The bottarga gives the pasta an intense, slightly salty flavor and an unmistakable depth. Freshly chopped parsley and a squeeze of lemon juice round off the dish and give it a refreshing touch.

Spaghetti con bottarga is a perfect example of the Sardinian ability to transform simple ingredients into extraordinary taste sensations. It demonstrates an appreciation for local seafood and a preference for dishes that highlight both the freshness of the ingredients and the centuries-old traditions of island cuisine.
